Play Area

Up to Date Report from meeting held on 12th march 2026

LATEST NEWS ON THE STOURTON CAUNDLE PLAYGROUND REFURBISHMENT

Time to update everyone on what is happening with the village play area.

Many of you will have taken part in the recent survey Keith Lindsay ran to discover which pieces of play equipment would be the most popular choices

with children who regularly use the playground.   You will know that we have

raised a considerable sum of money, although not yet the full amount needed

to purchase and install all the play equipment that would make a really exciting

play space.

Some of you were able to come to the meeting in the village hall on 12th March, at which we agreed to select the top favourite – the McKay Playtower – along with

the Horizontal Ladder and the Log Traverse as Phase 1 of our redevelopment.

We will also buy and set up a new, larger goal post and netting in the old BMX park area.   Unfortunately, we cannot at this stage afford the Space Net (which was the second most popular choice, and the second most expensive) but this

will be included in Phase 2 of the set up, along with the Mud Kitchen, Balance Beam, Tyre Traverse and a whole lot more.

Our intention was that with the initial choices we have provided something for children of different ages to enjoy.   It will take about ten weeks from order to supply and install, so we hope these pieces of equipment will be in situ ahead of the summer holidays.

We are hugely grateful to Alban Harris, who has committed to clearing the whole ground in preparation for the installation of the new equipment.   Be aware that this is saving us thousands of pounds, so a wonderful gesture from Alban involving a lot of work.   Thank you from us all.

Another thank you to Keith, who continues to tackle the grant application process, which requires a lot of careful and detailed work to ensure all the right boxes have been ticked.   We are hoping to raise enough money for Phase 2, so please keep thinking about how we can achieve this.   The Trooper is kindly going to donate the proceeds of the Duck Race again this year, so please support generously.

Finally, Sovereign SNG have agreed to repaint the garage doors and repair the ground outside the playground entrance.   As they have budgeted for this work, it should take place this month, weather permitting, and will be a welcome improvement.

So keep your fingers crossed that, by the summer edition of The Caundler, we will have exciting new equipment in the playground for all to enjoy.

The Cycle Gym has been  closed as there are safety concerns identified by the ROSPA Inspection.

The climbing frame steps have broken in the centre so that is also closed pending repair or replacement.

A new group has been set up to research equipment and fund raising and the best way forward for the play-area. (September 2024)
